How to Floss with Braces

Flossing with proper technique isn’t necessarily the easiest thing to do so it’s no surprise that throwing braces into the mix makes things even more complicated. While the initial annoyance of having to learn how to floss with braces may make you or your child want to forget it all together, it’s crucial that you or they still floss! After all, what’s a perfectly straightened smile when it’s affected by issues like gum disease and cavities because proper oral hygiene hasn’t been practiced?

The good news is that there are a few handy tips and tricks you can keep in mind to make flossing with braces much easier.

WEAVE AROUND BRACKETS & WIRES WITH A FLOSS THREADER

Flossing around your braces with traditional dental floss may not be so simple, but flossing with a floss threader is a whole other story! Floss threaders are handy little plastic tools that can help you easily pull the floss string around the brackets and wires of your braces. You will be surprised how much easier it is to use traditional floss around your braces once you’ve paired it with a floss threader!

BLAST AWAY FOOD PARTICLES WITH A WATER FLOSSER

Another option is to try using a water flosser. Rather than using a piece of string to dislodge any food or bacteria stuck between your teeth and around your braces, a water flosser uses pressurized water to get all the gunk out. Some people find them easier and more effective to use than regular floss. You can also get a special orthodontic tip for your water flosser that’s specifically designed to work with orthodontic appliances.
