At Laredo Orthodontics, we understand that orthodontic emergencies can happen at any time, often when it's least convenient. While some issues require immediate attention, many can be managed at home until you can visit our office. Here, Dr. Catalina Zambrano, our board-certified orthodontist, shares essential tips for handling common orthodontic issues and guidance on when it's necessary to see your orthodontist.
Common Orthodontic Issues and Home Remedies
1. Loose or Broken Brackets, Bands, or WiresIf a bracket, band, or wire gets loose or breaks, it may cause discomfort. Cover any sharp edges with dental wax to protect your mouth. If the wire has shifted and is poking your cheek, tongue, or gum, try pushing it back into place with a cotton swab or pencil eraser. Avoid cutting the wire, as this can lead to swallowing or other injuries.
2. Misplaced or Poking Archwire, Bracket, or TieAs teeth shift, the archwire might start poking out near the back of the mouth, irritating the cheeks. You can push the wire into a better position using the eraser end of a pencil or place wax on it to alleviate discomfort. If a bracket or tie has turned on the wire and is poking into your mouth, try using a sterile tweezer to reposition it.
3. Lost SeparatorsMany patients lose a separator during their treatment. If this happens, take note of when and inform us at your next appointment. If it occurs just before your next appointment, you might need to come in earlier to have it replaced.
When to See Your Orthodontist
1. Severe Pain or DiscomfortIf you experience severe pain or discomfort that you cannot alleviate with over-the-counter pain relievers or the above home remedies, it's time to visit your orthodontist.
2. Significant Appliance DamageFor broken appliances that significantly affect the treatment—such as a broken archwire or multiple loose brackets—it’s crucial to see your orthodontist immediately to ensure your treatment stays on track.
3. Injuries Involving Orthodontic AppliancesIf you sustain any injury to your face, mouth, or teeth that involves your orthodontic appliances, seek immediate medical attention or contact our office for an emergency appointment.
How to Avoid Orthodontic Emergencies
- Wear a Mouthguard: If you engage in sports, wearing a protective mouthguard can help prevent injuries to your braces or orthodontic appliance.
- Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods: Hard and sticky foods can damage orthodontic appliances. Avoid them to reduce the risk of emergencies.
- Regular Maintenance: Follow all care instructions provided by your orthodontist and keep regular appointment schedules to ensure your appliances are in good condition.
