Tips to Reduce Braces Pain

Tips to Reduce Braces Pain

When your child is first adjusting to their braces and occasionally during their treatment, they may experience some pain, discomfort, and tenderness. In this blog post, we suggest ways to reduce your child’s braces pain. This pain should be mild and temporary. If you child’s oral pain persists or is severe, please consult your dentist!

COOL DOWN

Flexible ice packs, cold compresses, and cold snacks (like smoothies or frozen yogurt) can reduce inflammation from irritated cheeks. But do not let your child chew on ice, which could break wire, bracket, or tooth. Broken braces can extend their treatment and a damaged tooth can jeopardize their oral health!

ORTHODONTIC WAX

Your child may feel the wires and brackets of their braces poking into their lips, cheeks, and tongue. Applying dental wax to the problem areas can act as a cushion to protect your child’s mouth. Additionally, please let us know if this happens so we can take a look. A wire may have come loose and need adjustment.

OVER-THE-COUNTER PAIN RELIEF

Certain drugstore items are worth having on hand during your child’s orthodontic treatment. Oral pain relief gel and over-the-counter pain relievers may both come in handy at some point during life with braces. Be sure to closely follow the medicine’s directions on the label and to consult your primary care provider about any questions or contraindications.
